Introduction to high speed steel
High-speed steel is a specialty tool known for maintaining high hardness at elevated temperatures, typically up to 595°C (1100°F) (e.g., 48 HRC). This property makes it particularly suitable for cutting tools for high-speed machining of metals, such as drills, milling cutters, and turning tools. It is often called “red hardness” due to its resistance to softening at high temperatures.
Composition and Classification
High-speed steel is a complex, multi-component alloy system consisting of molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) as the main alloying elements, with the addition of chromium (Cr), vanadium (V) and cobalt (Co). The classification is based on the standards of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and is divided into two main groups:
Group M (molybdenum-based high-speed steels): With molybdenum as the main alloying element, they are divided into two subgroups:
Subgroups containing only molybdenum or small amounts of tungsten, e.g. M1, M7, M10.
Subgroups containing molybdenum and a large amount of tungsten, e.g. M2, M3, M4.
Group T (tungsten-based high-speed steels): Tungsten is the main alloying element, e.g. T1, T2, T4, T5, T6, T8, T15.
Typical steel grades in Group M and Group T (e.g. M1, M2, T1) are very similar in terms of properties and cutting performance and can be used interchangeably in many applications. In addition, certain high-alloyed types (e.g., cobalt-containing modifications) can be tempered to ultra-high hardness (69-70 HRC).
Key Properties
The unique properties of HSS derive from its alloying composition and processing and include the following key features:
- High-temperature hardness and wear resistance: thanks to the presence of alloying carbides such as M₆C and MC-type carbides, HSS maintain their hardness (63-70 HRC) at high temperatures, with wear resistance ratings of 7-9.
- Toughness: Depending on the specific steel grade, toughness ratings range from 3 to 8. Steel can withstand some impact and mechanical stress.
- Processing Properties: a. Hardening at elevated temperatures near the melting point. b. Fine austenitic grain size. c. Deep hardening by static air cooling. d. Significant secondary hardening effect during tempering.
