Table notes

Typical physical properties of wrought stainless steels in the annealed condition: density, elastic modulus, mean coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), thermal conductivity, specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetic permeability and melting range. Values are given in metric units with the source’s imperial equivalents in parentheses.

CTE is the mean coefficient from 0 °C (32 °F) to the listed temperature; thermal conductivity is listed at 100 °C and 500 °C. These are the inputs used for thermal-expansion and heat-transfer calculations in tooling, dies and fixtures as well as for general design work.

Note: two melting ranges are printed inconsistently in the source and are reproduced as shown: type 302B, 1375–1400 °C (2550–2550 °F), and type 303, 1400–1450 °C (2550–2590 °F).

Magnetic permeability is an approximate value; the ferritic and martensitic types (405, 410, 420, 430, 440A, 440C, and others) are magnetic and the austenitic types are essentially non-magnetic (value 1.02). Verify against the applicable product specification before design use.
