H Steel Composition Chart

Chemical composition limits for the carbon and alloy H steels, the grades whose designation carries an H for hardenability. An H grade is bought on two promises at once, a chemistry inside the ranges below and a hardenability band that the mill has to hold, which is why the carbon and manganese ranges here are wider than the same numbers without the H.

  • wt % ladle analysis

The 1038H to 15BxxH series, where the H suffix means the hardenability band is guaranteed and not only the chemistry. Table 1 of the source.

H steel composition chart, printable PDF

Two A4 pages with the composition limits of 85 grades in the carbon, carbon-boron and alloy H series, the grade label printed with a digit where the H belongs marked, and our contact details.

  • (a) Small quantities of certain elements may be found in alloy steel that are not specified or required. These elements are to be considered incidental and acceptable to the following maximum amounts. Copper to 0.35%, nickel to 0.25%, chromium to 0.20%, and molybdenum to 0.06%.
  • (b) For open hearth and basic oxygen steels, maximum sulfur content is to be 0.040%, and maximum phosphorus content is to be 0.035%. Maximum phosphorus and sulfur in basic electric furnace steels are to be 0.025% each.
  • (c) Sulfur content range is 0.035/0.050%.
  • (d) Electric furnace steel, which is the E4340H row.
  • (e) These steels contain 0.0005 to 0.003% B, which is the 94BxxH family.
  • Each cell in these tables is a range written as a minimum and a maximum, in the form 0.34/0.43, and the H suffix is what carries the guaranteed hardenability band.

Table notes

One grade label in the source table is printed with a digit where the letter H belongs. Grade 81B45H is printed as 81B4S5 in the source and is given here as 81B45H, because the H suffix is what makes the grade an H steel and 81B45 is the base grade it is derived from.

An H grade is not interchangeable with the same number without the H. Both have the same nominal chemistry, but only the H grade carries a hardenability band that the mill guarantees by end-quench test. A part designed around the band needs the H grade, and a certificate for the plain grade will not show the hardenability result.

Composition data is for general reference only. Actual values vary by standard, mill, and heat number. Confirm against the material test certificate (MTC) or contact Aobo Steel. Grade pages for the common carburizing and through-hardening steels, such as 8620 and 4140, carry the base grade data.

What the H buys

A mill that supplies 4140H has to end-quench test the heat and prove a hardenability band, not only pour a chemistry inside a range. That is the whole difference between the two designations.

Where H steels are used

Gears, shafts and other parts that are case hardened and then quenched rely on the band to harden to a predictable depth. The case hardening steel guide sets out how the depth is specified.

Reading the slash

Every cell in these tables is a range written as minimum slash maximum, because an H grade is bought on a window rather than on a single value. A certificate that lands inside the window is correct even when it does not match a neighbouring heat.
