Alloy Steel Composition Chart
Chemical composition limits for the SAE-AISI low-alloy grades, quoted as ladle or cast analysis in weight percent. The table runs from the 13xx manganese series through the 40xx molybdenum, 41xx chromium-molybdenum, 43xx to 48xx nickel-chromium-molybdenum, 51xx chromium, 61xx chromium-vanadium, 81xx to 94xx and 92xx silicon grades, with the SAE potential standard PS grades in a second table.
wt % ladle or cast analysis
Composition limits for billets, blooms, slabs and hot-rolled or cold-finished bars. Slightly wider ranges apply to plate. Table 19 of the source.

Three A4 pages with the composition limits of 116 grades, the manganese, molybdenum, chromium and nickel series and the SAE potential standard PS grades, the values flagged in the source notes marked, and our contact details.
SAE potential standard steels
The PS series, grades proposed as standard and often supplied to a hardenability requirement rather than to a chemistry alone. Table 20 of the source.

Alloy steel composition chart, printable PDF
Three A4 pages with the composition limits of 116 grades, the manganese, molybdenum, chromium and nickel series and the SAE potential standard PS grades, the values flagged in the source notes marked, and our contact details.
- (a) Small quantities of certain elements that are not specified or required may be found in alloy steels. These elements are to be considered as incidental and are acceptable to the following maxima. Copper to 0.35%, nickel to 0.25%, chromium to 0.20%, and molybdenum to 0.06%.
- (b) Electric furnace steel, which is why the E4340 row carries lower phosphorus and sulfur than the 4340 row above it.
- (c) Boron content is 0.0005-0.003%. Boron is added to raise hardenability in place of part of the alloy content, and the letter B sits before the last two digits of the grade number.
- (d) Some PS steels may be supplied to a hardenability requirement. PS 34 and PS 38 are supplied to a hardenability requirement of 15 HRC points within the range of 23-43 HRC at J4, and PS 66 carries a vanadium content of 0.10-0.15%.
Table notes
Three values in the source table are printed with a defect. Grade 4118 molybdenum is printed as 0.08-015 and is given here as 0.08-0.15, because a 15 % molybdenum range is not possible and the same chemistry is printed correctly for the 4118-type grades elsewhere in the table. Grades 4023 show a blank molybdenum cell and a blank vanadium cell where every other row carries the not-specified mark, and the row is reproduced as printed. Grade 8600 is printed against the UNS number G86600, which belongs to SAE 8660, and the row is reproduced as printed rather than renumbered. Two further values are reproduced exactly as the source prints them and look unusual. PS 56 carries 0.080-0.13 % C and 0.445-0.65 % Cr, and PS 57 carries 0.15-0.35 % sulfur under a column headed S max.
The values above are ladle or cast analysis limits in weight percent. Product analysis tolerances are wider and are set by the governing standard. Confirm the limits that apply to your order against the material test certificate or with Aobo Steel before releasing a heat.
Composition data is for general reference only. Actual values vary by standard, mill, and heat number. Confirm against the material test certificate (MTC) or contact Aobo Steel. Grade pages for individual steels, such as the 4140 composition, carry the same table values for one grade with its heat treatment and applications.
Why the same grade has two chemistries
The 4340 row above carries 0.035 % phosphorus and 0.040 % sulfur. The E4340 row below it carries 0.025 and 0.025, because the E marks electric furnace steel with a cleaner residual level. Both are correct for the grade number.
Boron saves alloy content
A boron grade reaches the same hardenability with less nickel, chromium and molybdenum. The case hardening steel guide sets out when that trade is worth making on a carburized part.
Chromium and molybdenum do the work
In the 41xx series the chromium carries hardenability and the molybdenum carries temper resistance. The 4140 properties page shows what that combination does to hardness and to heat treatment.
Ask for the certificate with the heat number
Every alloy steel shipment leaves here with an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate that includes the heat number, so you can check the limits above against the heat that was actually rolled.
