Bulk Order Checklist: Length, Tolerance, MOQ Explained for D2 Tool Steel

Bulk purchasing of D2 tool steel is not only about price.
In most cases, delays, failed quotations, or unsuitable offers are caused by mismatched expectations on length, tolerance, size range, and order volume.

This page helps distributors, stockists, and bulk buyers quickly verify whether a requirement fits standard supply conditions before sending an inquiry.

If you are still evaluating material selection, you can first review the D2 Selection & Specification Guide to understand how specification choices affect performance and cost.

Why Bulk Orders Fail Before Production Starts

In real transactions, most issues are not related to the steel grade itself, but to specification mismatch:

  • Requesting fixed cut lengths instead of mill length
  • Expecting tight machining tolerances on raw material
  • Requesting sizes outside the standard supply range
  • Sending inquiries below the economic production volume

These problems lead to:

  • Quotation delays or rejection
  • Multiple clarification cycles
  • Increased procurement cost and longer lead time

This checklist eliminates these issues before they happen.

Bulk Order Checklist

Before submitting an RFQ, verify the following four parameters.

1. Size Range: Confirm Availability First

Before discussing price or delivery, confirm that your required size falls within standard supply capability.

Round bar:

  • Diameter: 12–800 mm

Plate:

  • Thickness: 12–400 mm
  • Width: 210–610 mm

Sizes outside this range should be confirmed before quotation.

Early confirmation avoids unnecessary delays and ensures feasibility.

2. Length: Mill Length Is the Standard

D2 tool steel for bulk export is supplied in mill lengths (random lengths), not as fixed-cut pieces.

Standard supply range:

  • Round bar/plate length: approx. 2–5.5 meters
  • Optimized for 20GP container loading (internal length ~5.8 m)

Fixed cut-to-length is generally not supported for bulk orders.

If your application requires exact lengths, cutting should be arranged after delivery.

3. Tolerance: Defined by Surface Condition

Tolerance depends on the delivery condition rather than the grade.

Black (hot-rolled) surface:

  • Typical tolerance: 0 / +5 mm
  • Suitable for further machining

Machined surface (peeled/milled):

  • Round bar: 0 / +1 mm
  • Plate thickness: 0 / +1 mm

Tighter tolerances require additional machining, increasing both cost and lead time.

4. MOQ: Designed for Bulk Supply Efficiency

Aobo Steel operates on a bulk-supply model, not on small-quantity orders.

Standard MOQ:

  • Minimum: 5 tons per order
  • Recommended: 20GP container (~26 tons)

Orders below MOQ are generally not economical due to forging, processing, and export logistics structure.

Quick Qualification Table

Practical Advice for Distributors and Stockists

If you are purchasing for inventory:

  • Select sizes within the standard range to ensure a stable supply
  • Use mill length to maintain flexibility
  • Choose a black surface to reduce upfront cost
  • Apply machining only when required downstream

This approach reduces cost, improves stock turnover, and simplifies procurement.
