H13 tool steel properties

The specific properties depend heavily on the tempering temperature. Here are typical longitudinal mechanical properties when air-cooled from 1025 °C (1875 °F) and tempered:

H13 Tool Steel Heat Treatment Overview

Hardening

Preheating to around 815°C (1500°F) is recommended before hardening.

Austenitizing temperature: 1010–1040°C (1850–1900°F).

H13 is typically air quenched to minimize distortion and residual stress. Hardness after quenching: 52–54 HRC.

Tempering

Tempering should be performed immediately after quenching.

Typical tempering range: 540–620°C (1000–1150°F). Double tempering is commonly recommended for hot work tooling.

Typical hardness after tempering:

  • 540°C: ~47–48 HRC
  • 620°C: ~36–38 HRC

Tempering around 500°C (930°F) should generally be avoided due to reduced toughness.
