5Cr4Mo3SiMnVAl Hot Work Tool Steel Properties
At Aobo Steel, we work extensively with tool steels, such as 5Cr4Mo3SiMnVAl Tool Steel. This grade, also designated T23355, is a reliable base steel known for its suitability in both hot and cold working applications. You might also find it referenced as 012Al or, in certain specific contexts, as 5Cr4Mo3SiMnVA1.
1. 5Cr4Mo3SiMnVAl Tool Steel Chemical Composition (GB/T 1299 – 2000 Standard)
The performance of this steel comes from its specific chemical makeup (mass fraction):
- Carbon (C): 0.47% – 0.57%
- Silicon (Si): 0.80% – 1.10%
- Manganese (Mn): 0.80% – 1.10%
- Chromium (Cr): 3.80% – 4.30%
- Molybdenum (Mo): 2.80% – 3.40%
- Vanadium (V): 0.80% – 1.20%
- Aluminum (Al): 0.30% – 0.70%
- Phosphorus (P): ≤0.030%
- Sulfur (S): ≤0.030%
2. Key Properties and Performance Characteristics
2.1 Hot Work Performance
This steel excels as a hot work die steel due to:
- High strength and hardness are maintained at high temperatures, effective up to 700 °C.
- Good stability during tempering.
- Strong resistance to wear and thermal fatigue.
- Good oxidation resistance.
- Often shows superior high-temperature strength and thermal fatigue resistance compared to 3Cr2W8V steel.
2.2 Cold Work Performance
When used for cold work tooling, 5Cr4Mo3SiMnVAl Tool Steel offers:
- Relatively high toughness, especially when compared to Cr12 type steels and other low-alloy options.
- Good hardenability, responding well to heat treatment processes.
3. Thermal Processing and Forging Recommendations
Key transformation temperatures for heat treatment are approximately:
- Ac1: 837°C
- Ar1: 902°C
- Ms: 277°C
Based on standard practices and our experience, we recommend the following forging parameters:
- Heating Temperature: 1100°C – 1140°C
- Start Forging Temperature: 1050°C – 1080°C
- Finish Forging Temperature: ≥850°C
- Cooling Method: Slow cooling, such as in sand or a pit, is essential after forging.
4. Common Applications
The versatility of 5Cr4Mo3SiMnVAl Tool Steel makes it suitable for a range of industrial tooling needs:
4.1 Hot Work Tooling
- Hot extrusion dies (common in bearing and standard parts manufacturing)
- Hot stamping dies
- Hot forging dies (can serve as a replacement for 3Cr2W8V in some cases)
4.2 Cold Work Tooling
- Cold heading dies (widely used in the standard parts industry)
- Cold punching dies
- Cold extrusion molds (evaluate based on specific workpiece requirements)
- Plastic molds
It has demonstrated good performance in demanding uses, such as vacuum heat-treated heading dies for 40HRC stainless steel bolts.
