1.2436 is a high wear-resistant chromium steel. It is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold-work tool steel. This steel has high hardenability, hardness, toughness, and wear resistance. It is 3-4 times more wear-resistant than general low-alloy tool steel. It has low distortion during quenching. It has excellent wear resistance and edge retention ability.

We adopt the ESR process for diameters above 200mm to ensure that the internal structure can meet Ultrasonic testing (UT) Sep 1921-84 E/e flaw detection.

1.2436 heat treatment

1. Soft Annealing

Purpose: Reduce hardness and improve machinability.

  • Heating temperature: 780-820°C

  • Holding time: 2-4 hours (depending on workpiece size)

  • Cooling method: Furnace cool to 500°C, then air cool

  • Hardness after annealing: ≤ 229 HB

2. Quenching

Purpose: Achieve high hardness and wear resistance.

  • Preheating temperature: 600-650°C (to reduce thermal stress)

  • Austenitizing temperature: 950-980°C

  • Holding time: 30 minutes per 25mm (workpiece thickness)

  • Cooling medium: Oil or air

  • Hardness after quenching: 62-64 HRC

3. Tempering

Purpose: Relieve quenching stress and improve toughness.

  • Tempering temperature: Selected based on target hardness (see table below)

  • Holding time: 2 hours per 25mm (workpiece thickness)

  • Cooling method: Air cooling

1.2436 Applications

1.2436 tool steel is widely used to make cold work molds with large cross-sections and complex shapes, subjected to significant impact forces and requiring high wear resistance. Examples include silicon steel punching dies, thread rolling dies, and drawing dies.

1. Mainly suitable for medium-load stamping dies, for punching stainless steel, copper, silicon, and aluminum.

2. Used for stainless steel, silicon steel sheet stamping dies (medium load), and deep cup part stamping dies.
