Com teores aproximados de 0,40% de carbono, 1% de cromo e 0,2% de molibd\u00eanio, ele apresenta um forte equil\u00edbrio entre resist\u00eancia, tenacidade e temperabilidade, permitindo que uma \u00fanica classe abranja uma ampla gama de n\u00edveis de resist\u00eancia por meio de tratamento t\u00e9rmico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Internacionalmente, \u00e9 conhecido como 42CrMo4 (1.7225) sob EN\/DIN, SCM440 sob JIS, 42CrMo sob GB e G41400 sob UNS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Um ponto importante na sele\u00e7\u00e3o de materiais: o a\u00e7o 4140 \u00e9 um a\u00e7o estrutural ligado, n\u00e3o um a\u00e7o ferramenta. Ele \u00e9 utilizado em eixos, engrenagens, parafusos, acoplamentos e componentes de m\u00e1quinas que precisam suportar cargas e resistir \u00e0 fadiga. O cromo aumenta a temperabilidade e a resist\u00eancia ao desgaste; o molibd\u00eanio melhora ainda mais a temperabilidade, mant\u00e9m a resist\u00eancia em temperaturas moderadas e reduz a suscetibilidade \u00e0 fragiliza\u00e7\u00e3o revers\u00edvel por revenido. Juntos, eles permitem que se\u00e7\u00f5es mais espessas endure\u00e7am de maneira mais uniforme do que o a\u00e7o carbono comum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mechanical-properties\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Propriedades mec\u00e2nicas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O a\u00e7o 4140 raramente \u00e9 usado em uma \u00fanica condi\u00e7\u00e3o fixa. As propriedades certificadas segundo uma norma como a EN 10083-3 devem estar vinculadas a uma dimens\u00e3o de se\u00e7\u00e3o transversal e a um local de ensaio definidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hardness-and-hardenability\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dureza e temperabilidade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ap\u00f3s t\u00eampera em se\u00e7\u00f5es finas com estrutura martens\u00edtica completa, o a\u00e7o 4140 atinge aproximadamente 54\u201358 HRC. Ap\u00f3s revenido, a dureza de trabalho pr\u00e1tica geralmente fica entre 50\u201355 HRC, e a maioria das aplica\u00e7\u00f5es em servi\u00e7o utiliza valores menores para manter a tenacidade \u00fatil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dificuldade por percurso:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recozido:<\/strong> ~197 HB, macio e usin\u00e1vel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Endurecido por completo (t\u00eampera em \u00f3leo):<\/strong> at\u00e9 ~55 HRC em l\u00e2minas delgadas (menos de 25 mm); ~45\u201352 HRC entre 25 e 75 mm; ~35\u201345 HRC acima de 75 mm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Endurecido por indu\u00e7\u00e3o ou por chama:<\/strong> Caso HRC 50-58 sobre um n\u00facleo dif\u00edcil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nitretado:<\/strong> Superf\u00edcie com dureza de aproximadamente 500\u2013650 HV (equivalente a aproximadamente 49\u201358 HRC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O limite real \u00e9 a temperabilidade, n\u00e3o a dureza m\u00e1xima. O a\u00e7o 4140 possui apenas temperabilidade moderada, portanto, em se\u00e7\u00f5es espessas, o n\u00facleo resfria muito lentamente para formar martensita completa, e a dureza do n\u00facleo diminui. Acima de aproximadamente 100 mm, a t\u00eampera em \u00f3leo n\u00e3o endurece mais o centro no mesmo n\u00edvel da superf\u00edcie. Para pe\u00e7as grandes que precisam ser duras em toda a sua extens\u00e3o, este \u00e9 o fator decisivo, sendo necess\u00e1rio um a\u00e7o com maior temperabilidade ou um processo diferente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-heat-treatment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tratamento t\u00e9rmico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recozimento:<\/strong> Aquecer a 830\u2013870\u00b0C, manter nessa temperatura e, em seguida, resfriar lentamente no forno at\u00e9 obter uma estrutura macia e usin\u00e1vel pr\u00f3xima a 197 HB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Normalizando:<\/strong> Aquecer a 870\u2013900\u00b0C e resfriar ao ar para refinar os gr\u00e3os e uniformizar a estrutura antes do endurecimento ou usinagem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Endurecimento:<\/strong> Austenitizar a 830\u2013870 \u00b0C e resfriar em \u00f3leo. O \u00f3leo \u00e9 o padr\u00e3o; \u00e1gua ou salmoura aumentam o risco de trincas em pe\u00e7as com formatos complexos e geralmente s\u00e3o evitadas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>T\u00eampera:<\/strong> A t\u00eampera deve ser feita entre aproximadamente 205\u00b0C e 650\u00b0C para definir as propriedades finais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baixa temperatura (~205\u00b0C): maior dureza, ~50\u201355 HRC, menor tenacidade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>M\u00e9dio (~425\u2013500 \u00b0C): equil\u00edbrio entre resist\u00eancia e tenacidade, ~35\u201340 HRC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alta (~540\u2013650 \u00b0C): m\u00e1xima resist\u00eancia a cargas din\u00e2micas e de fadiga, ~28\u201335 HRC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dois efeitos de fragiliza\u00e7\u00e3o merecem aten\u00e7\u00e3o:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fragiliza\u00e7\u00e3o por martensita revenida<\/strong> Ocorre durante o revenimento na faixa de 260\u2013370 \u00b0C, reduzindo a resist\u00eancia ao impacto. Quando a resist\u00eancia \u00e9 importante, essa faixa normalmente \u00e9 ignorada.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fragiliza\u00e7\u00e3o por revenido revers\u00edvel<\/strong> Pode desenvolver-se em se\u00e7\u00f5es espessas que esfriam lentamente na faixa de 375\u2013575 \u00b0C ap\u00f3s o revenimento em alta temperatura, e est\u00e1 relacionada ao f\u00f3sforo e impurezas semelhantes. O molibd\u00eanio no a\u00e7o 4140 reduz essa tend\u00eancia, e um resfriamento mais r\u00e1pido a partir da temperatura de revenimento a limita ainda mais.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-4140-or-a-tool-steel-matching-the-grade-to-the-job\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A\u00e7o 4140 ou a\u00e7o ferramenta? A escolha do a\u00e7o certo para cada aplica\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O a\u00e7o 4140 e os a\u00e7os ferramenta apresentam sobreposi\u00e7\u00e3o em algumas faixas de dureza, por isso \u00e9 tentador substituir um pelo outro com base apenas no pre\u00e7o. A escolha correta depende do que a pe\u00e7a realmente precisa suportar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O a\u00e7o 4140 \u00e9 a melhor op\u00e7\u00e3o quando a pe\u00e7a suporta carga e fadiga, em vez de corte ou abras\u00e3o: eixos, engrenagens, mandris, suportes, refor\u00e7os e pe\u00e7as estruturais de m\u00e1quinas. \u00c9 mais resistente e muito mais barato que o a\u00e7o ferramenta, solda-se com mais facilidade (com pr\u00e9-aquecimento e tratamento t\u00e9rmico p\u00f3s-soldagem) e est\u00e1 dispon\u00edvel em uma gama maior de tamanhos e formatos. Quando n\u00e3o s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rias extrema resist\u00eancia ao desgaste e dureza Rockwell C (HRC) acima de 58, investir em a\u00e7o ferramenta n\u00e3o traz benef\u00edcios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">O a\u00e7o ferramenta \u00e9 a resposta certa quando os modos de falha s\u00e3o desgaste, reten\u00e7\u00e3o de fio ou calor. O a\u00e7o 4140 n\u00e3o consegue manter o fio de corte nem resistir ao desgaste abrasivo da matriz t\u00e3o bem quanto um a\u00e7o com alto teor de carboneto, e perde resist\u00eancia rapidamente acima de aproximadamente 400 \u00b0C. Tr\u00eas pontos merecem ser destacados:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ferramentas de corte e estampagem<\/strong> Requerem dureza (acima de 60 HRC) e volume de carboneto que o a\u00e7o 4140 n\u00e3o possui.
