A2 normally needs double tempering to stabilize the hardened structure and reduce brittleness. 4140 typically undergoes a single temper to achieve the target balance of strength and toughness. For 4140, the 230\u2013370\u00b0C tempering range should generally be avoided because it can reduce impact toughness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A2 may retain more austenite because of its higher carbon and alloy content. Sub-zero or cryogenic treatment is sometimes used when dimensional stability is critical.
