229 Die Steel Acceptance Criteria

A die casting die is bought to a price and to a set of castings, and in North America the quality of the steel inside it is normally written to one document, NADCA 229. That document sets what a special quality die steel has to be before it is accepted, and what its heat treatment has to prove afterwards. This page sets out the grades the standard names for each family of cast metal, the lines a die specification should carry, and why the heat treatment sits inside the same acceptance document as the steel. It is written for buyers comparing quotations that read alike on paper.

What the document is

NADCA 229 carries the full title Special Quality Die Steel and Heat Treatment Acceptance Criteria for Die Casting Dies, and it is published by the North American Die Casting Association. The earlier die steel document, NADCA 207, has been absorbed into it, so a quotation or a data sheet that names 207 is naming an older number for the same subject and the current edition is the one to ask for. The distinction that matters to a buyer is between a grade and a quality level. H13 is a grade, and any mill can produce it to a wide spread of cleanliness and soundness. Premium Grade H13 and Superior Grade H13 are quality levels within that grade, and the standard defines them, so the two words on a drawing are what make the certificate checkable.

The tooling requirement for each family of cast metal

The tooling section of the NADCA product specification standards names the grades it expects for the dies used with each family of die cast metal. The list is deliberately short, and the reasoning behind each line is about casting temperature. The cooler the metal, the less the die wears and the lower the grade that can be justified. The hotter the metal, the less room there is to trade quality for price.

Cast metal

Grade the standard names

What it means at the quotation stage

Zinc alloys

P-20, H-11, H13, Premium Grade H13 or Superior Grade H13 (per NADCA 229)

Zinc casts at the lowest temperature in the nonferrous family and wears its tooling least, so P-20 is permitted where the part design is simple. The same passage warns that non premium tooling on a zinc part expires if production volumes later rise, and that the replacement die then costs far more than the premium material would have at the start.

Aluminium, magnesium and ZA alloys, noncritical part design, low volume

H-10, H-11, H13

These dies need high quality tool steel as a minimum. Where part features are critical or a long run is planned, the standard points to premium grade tooling instead of the minimum.

Aluminium, magnesium, ZA-12 and ZA-27, critical part design, higher volume

Premium Grade H13 or Superior Grade H13 (per NADCA 229)

For intricate features and tight specifications at volume the standard expects premium or superior grade steel, and states that non premium tooling will nearly always fail early.

Brass alloys

H13

Copper alloys are cast at the highest temperature in the nonferrous family, and only H13 high grade tool steel is recommended for brass die casting dies.

The tooling requirement named for each family of die cast metal in the tooling section of the NADCA product specification standards. The grades are quoted as the standard prints them, and the wording of each note follows the reasoning given in the same passage.

That table is the floor the standard sets and not a comparison between the grades. Which grade of the H series suits a particular die, and which one is swapped in when cracking or washout is the dominant failure, is a separate question and it is set out on the die casting die steel selection page, while the part each grade plays inside the die is on the die casting die component materials page.

The lines a die specification should carry

A standard only changes what a buyer receives if it is written into the order. The NADCA checklist for die casting die specifications carries one line for the cavity steel and a second line for its heat treatment, and each line ends with a box that asks whether a NADCA 229 certification is required. Both boxes are a decision the buyer makes at the enquiry stage. A die ordered with both boxes left unticked is a die accepted on the supplier’s word, which is exactly the position the standard exists to avoid.

Specification line

What the buyer states

What the supplier then has to prove

Cavity steel

H13, Premium Grade H13, Superior Grade H13, or another grade written into the specification

The grade supplied, backed by the mill certificate for the block

Steel acceptance

Whether a NADCA 229 certificate is required

The criteria the standard sets for the steel, from composition through to the properties tested on the block

Hardness

The hardness required in the finished die

A measured hardness inside the range asked for

Toughness

The impact requirement in ft.-lbs

A measured impact result at the specified hardness

Heat treatment

Whether a NADCA 229 certificate is required for the heat treat

That the treatment was carried out to give the hardness and the microstructure asked for

The die steel lines carried on the NADCA checklist for die casting die specifications, and what each line asks the supplier to prove when a certification is required.

What the acceptance covers

The acceptance criteria run across the steel and the treatment applied to it, and the current document is described by its publisher as covering the procurement of the steel and its heat treatment for extended die life. On the steel side that means composition, hardness range, cleanliness and soundness, structure, and the impact strength the material is capable of. On the treatment side it means the furnace and the cycle, the preheating, austenitizing and tempering temperatures and times, the quenching arrangements, the structure that results, and the hardness and impact testing that confirm it.

Acceptance area

On the steel

On the heat treatment

Identity

Chemical composition must match the grade

Not applicable

Hardness

A hardness range for the block

Hardness measured after the treatment

Cleanliness

Microcleanliness levels

Not applicable

Soundness

Ultrasonic requirements

Not applicable

Structure

Microstructural requirements

Microstructural requirements after treatment

Toughness

Impact strength capability

Hardness and impact strength testing

Furnace and cycle

Not applicable

Furnace requirements, preheating, austenitizing and tempering temperatures and times, and quenching requirements

The acceptance areas listed for the current NADCA 229 document, which covers both the special quality steel as procured and the heat treatment applied to it.

Why the heat treatment is inside the same document

A die steel is only as good as the treatment it receives, and the tooling section of the standard treats the treatment as a critical step in building the tool. High quality rapid quenching is named as essential to normal die life, and the procedure has to balance distortion against the metallurgical properties that come with a fast quench. That balance is a judgement about the section, the fixture and the furnace, which is why the recommendations of the die caster are to be respected and why the manufacturer’s own recommendations are named alongside the standard.

Certificates are the mechanism. Steel source certificates come from the material supplier and heat treat certificates come from the shop that ran the cycle, and the certificate is what states that the treatment achieved the correct hardness and microstructure rather than that the furnace was programmed correctly. The commercial section of the same standards goes further and names the items a progressive die caster can supply from NADCA research, including the stress relief applied between machining operations and the removal of the white layer left by EDM. Both of those live in the heat treat specification, not in the drawing.

For the buyer the practical consequence is that the steel and the treatment have to come from the same purchase decision. A premium grade block heat treated outside the accepted cycle carries a certificate for the steel and nothing for the die. The trade is described on the hot work heat treatment page, and the EDM layer on the EDM white layer page.

How to read a supplier certificate

Three things separate a certified block from a claimed one. The first is identity, meaning a grade and an analysis that match the order rather than a trade name. The second is the level of the grade, which for H13 means whether it is called premium or superior and which of the graded requirements that statement commits the mill to. The third is testing, meaning the impact result at the hardness asked for, since a hard block can still be a brittle one. A remelted grade is the usual route to the higher levels, because remelting is what lifts the cleanliness and refines the structure the standard places a limit on.

How a certificate is checked against the order is set out on the tool steel quality verification page and the test report verification page. The remelting route itself is described on the electroslag remelting page and the ESR H13 page, the impact values a hot work steel can hold on the impact toughness chart, and the cleanliness limits on the inclusion and grain size page.

Where to go next

The grade itself is described on the H13 tool steel page, and the same standard applies when the alternative grade is chosen, which is covered on the H11 page.
