Su composici\u00f3n aproximada de 0,40% de carbono, 1% de cromo y 0,2% de molibdeno le confiere un excelente equilibrio entre resistencia, tenacidad y templabilidad, lo que permite que una sola calidad abarque una amplia gama de niveles de resistencia mediante tratamiento t\u00e9rmico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nivel internacional, se conoce como 42CrMo4 (1.7225) seg\u00fan EN\/DIN, SCM440 seg\u00fan JIS, 42CrMo seg\u00fan GB y G41400 seg\u00fan UNS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un punto crucial para la selecci\u00f3n de materiales es que el acero 4140 es una aleaci\u00f3n estructural, no un acero para herramientas. Se utiliza en ejes, engranajes, pernos, acoplamientos y componentes de maquinaria que deben soportar cargas y resistir la fatiga. No est\u00e1 dise\u00f1ado para herramientas de corte, troquelado o conformado, donde la resistencia al desgaste y la alta dureza son fundamentales. El cromo aumenta la templabilidad y la resistencia al desgaste; el molibdeno mejora a\u00fan m\u00e1s la templabilidad, mantiene la resistencia a temperaturas moderadas y reduce la susceptibilidad a la fragilizaci\u00f3n reversible por revenido. En conjunto, permiten que las secciones m\u00e1s gruesas se endurezcan de manera m\u00e1s uniforme que en el acero al carbono.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-mechanical-properties\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Propiedades mec\u00e1nicas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El acero 4140 rara vez se utiliza en una \u00fanica condici\u00f3n fija. Las propiedades certificadas seg\u00fan una norma como la EN 10083-3 deben estar vinculadas a un tama\u00f1o de secci\u00f3n y una ubicaci\u00f3n de ensayo definidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hardness-and-hardenability\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dureza y templabilidad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En estado templado, en secciones delgadas con una estructura martens\u00edtica completa, el acero 4140 alcanza aproximadamente 54\u201358 HRC. Tras el revenido, la dureza de trabajo pr\u00e1ctica suele ser de 50\u201355 HRC, y la mayor\u00eda de las aplicaciones requieren una dureza menor para conservar una tenacidad \u00fatil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dureza por ruta:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recocido:<\/strong> ~197 HB, blando y mecanizable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Templado en toda su masa (en aceite):<\/strong> hasta ~55 HRC en secciones delgadas (menos de 25 mm); ~45\u201352 HRC a 25\u201375 mm; ~35\u201345 HRC por encima de 75 mm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Endurecido por inducci\u00f3n o por llama:<\/strong> Caso HRC 50\u201358 sobre n\u00facleo duro.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nitrurado:<\/strong> Superficie de ~500\u2013650 HV (equivalente a aproximadamente 49\u201358 HRC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El l\u00edmite real reside en la templabilidad, no en la dureza m\u00e1xima. El acero 4140 presenta una templabilidad moderada, por lo que en secciones gruesas el n\u00facleo se enfr\u00eda demasiado lentamente para formar martensita completa, y la dureza del n\u00facleo disminuye. Por encima de los 100 mm aproximadamente, el temple en aceite ya no endurece el centro al mismo nivel que la superficie. Para piezas grandes que deben ser duras en toda su extensi\u00f3n, este es el factor determinante, y se requiere un grado con mayor capacidad de endurecimiento o un proceso diferente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-heat-treatment\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tratamiento t\u00e9rmico<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recocido:<\/strong> Calentar a 830\u2013870 \u00b0C, mantener a esa temperatura y, a continuaci\u00f3n, enfriar lentamente en el horno hasta obtener una estructura blanda y mecanizable cercana a los 197 HB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Normalizando:<\/strong> Calentar a 870\u2013900 \u00b0C y enfriar al aire para refinar el grano y uniformizar la estructura antes del endurecimiento o el mecanizado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Endurecimiento:<\/strong> Austenitizar a 830\u2013870 \u00b0C y templar en aceite. El aceite es el m\u00e9todo est\u00e1ndar; el agua o la salmuera aumentan el riesgo de agrietamiento en formas complejas y, por lo general, se evitan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Templado:<\/strong> Templar entre aproximadamente 205 \u00b0C y 650 \u00b0C para fijar las propiedades finales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baja (~205 \u00b0C): m\u00e1xima dureza, ~50\u201355 HRC, m\u00ednima tenacidad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temperatura media (~425\u2013500 \u00b0C): equilibrio entre resistencia y tenacidad, ~35\u201340 HRC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alta (~540\u2013650 \u00b0C): m\u00e1xima tenacidad para cargas din\u00e1micas y de fatiga, ~28\u201335 HRC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dos efectos de fragilizaci\u00f3n merecen ser respetados:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fragilizaci\u00f3n por martensita templada<\/strong> Esto ocurre durante el revenido en el rango de 260\u2013370 \u00b0C, lo que reduce la tenacidad al impacto. Cuando la tenacidad es importante, normalmente se omite este rango.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fragilizaci\u00f3n reversible por temple<\/strong> Puede desarrollarse en secciones gruesas que se enfr\u00edan lentamente en el rango de 375\u2013575 \u00b0C despu\u00e9s del revenido a alta temperatura, y est\u00e1 relacionado con el f\u00f3sforo y otras impurezas similares. El molibdeno en el acero 4140 reduce esta tendencia, y un enfriamiento m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido desde la temperatura de revenido la limita a\u00fan m\u00e1s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-4140-or-a-tool-steel-matching-the-grade-to-the-job\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u00bfAcero 4140 o acero para herramientas? C\u00f3mo elegir el grado adecuado para cada trabajo.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los aceros 4140 y los aceros para herramientas presentan cierta superposici\u00f3n en sus rangos de dureza, por lo que resulta tentador sustituir uno por otro bas\u00e1ndose \u00fanicamente en el precio. La elecci\u00f3n correcta depende de las exigencias a las que est\u00e9 sometida la pieza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El acero 4140 es la mejor opci\u00f3n cuando la pieza soporta carga y fatiga en lugar de corte o abrasi\u00f3n: ejes, engranajes, mandriles, soportes, travesa\u00f1os y componentes estructurales de maquinaria. Es m\u00e1s resistente y mucho m\u00e1s econ\u00f3mico que el acero para herramientas, se suelda con mayor facilidad (con precalentamiento y tratamiento t\u00e9rmico posterior a la soldadura) y est\u00e1 disponible en una gama m\u00e1s amplia de tama\u00f1os y formas. Cuando no se requiere una vida \u00fatil extrema ni una dureza superior a 58 HRC, pagar por acero para herramientas no compensa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El acero para herramientas es la respuesta correcta cuando los modos de falla son desgaste, retenci\u00f3n del filo o calor. El acero 4140 no puede mantener un filo de corte ni resistir el desgaste abrasivo de la matriz tan bien como un grado con alto contenido de carburo, y pierde resistencia r\u00e1pidamente por encima de los 400 \u00b0C. Vale la pena destacar tres puntos clave:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Herramientas de corte y troquelado<\/strong> Requieren la dureza (60+ HRC) y el volumen de carburo que el 4140 no posee.
