It is a few millimetres long and it decides almost everything about the extrusion. It sets the size, the shape, the surface finish and the speed, and it is the part of the die that wears. Getting the bearing length right is the core of die design, and the rule behind it is the same in every shop. The bearing is long where the metal flows fast and short where it flows slowly. This page sets out what the bearing controls, what decides its length, and the two cuts, choke and relief, that are used to trim it.

What the bearing controls

The die designer treats the bearing as the one variable that can be adjusted after the opening itself is fixed. The opening sets the shape. The bearing sets how the metal arrives at that shape. Because the metal is pushed, not pulled, the flow is not even across the die face, and the bearing is what corrects it.

What the bearing sets

How it does it

Size

It holds the final cross section while the metal leaves the die, so a longer land on one side pulls that side back

Shape

It balances the flow between thick and thin parts of the profile, and an unbalanced bearing distorts the shape

Surface finish

It controls how much the hot metal rubs on the die steel as it passes, so it sets die lines and pick up

Extrusion speed

Friction at the land is what retards the metal, so the total bearing length caps the ram speed the die will run at

Die life

The bearing is the part of the die in sliding contact with hot aluminum, so it is the part that wears out

The functions of the die bearing. Size, shape, finish and speed are the four the source names first, and die life follows because the bearing is the surface that slides against hot aluminum.

Why the bearing length changes across one die

A bearing is never one length. In direct extrusion the metal drags on the container wall as the billet moves, so the metal at the centre of the billet runs ahead of the metal at the edge. Near the die opening the centre is faster and the edge is slower. To make the two arrive together, the bearing has to be shorter where the metal is slow and longer where it is fast, which in practice means the bearing is longest at the outside of the die and shortest near the centre. The same logic runs across a thin section. A thin leg of a profile flows slowly, so its bearing is shortened until the leg keeps pace with the heavier parts of the shape. Three things set the length at any one point.

Parameter

Effect on bearing length

Reason

Distance of the opening from the centre of the billet

Longer bearing further out

Friction at the billet and container interface slows the metal near the surface, so the bearing has to be longer near the edge to hold that metal back and even out the flow

Section thickness at that point

Shorter bearing in a thin section

A thin section leaves the die through a small opening and flows slowly, so its bearing is reduced to let it catch up

Pocket shape and size in front of the opening

Bearing set to match the pocket

The pocket is what feeds the opening, and how it is shaped decides how much metal arrives at each part of the bearing

The three parameters that set the bearing length at a point on the die opening. The first two are properties of the shape and its position in the die, and the third is the designer’s main tool for changing the flow.

Choke and relief, the two cuts that trim the bearing

Once the die is made, the bearing is adjusted from the front or the back. A choke is cut on the entry side and slows the metal down. A relief is cut on the exit side and speeds it up. Both are normally produced by electrical discharge machining, so the amount taken off can be measured and passed back to the die designer or the die maker. The angles below are the values the source gives for hard 2000 and 7000 series alloys, and they are the practical range rather than a rule for every die.

Feature

Where it is cut

Usual amount

What it does

Choke

Front of the bearing, on the billet side

An angle of up to 3 degrees

The metal is slowed as it enters, which fills out the die aperture and holds the dimensions. Choking the front of the bearing is the standard treatment for hard alloys, where the aim is to fill the aperture and hold the dimensions. In a single-bearing die, also called an equal-bearing die, the cavity is made in several converging stages, and the flow is balanced by the area of those stages rather than by the bearing, so the bearing can stay the same all round the opening. The advantage is speed. The metal picks up velocity as it passes through each stage of a converging cavity, and because the volume of metal is constant at every stage, a cavity whose mean area is larger than the final opening delivers the metal faster than a plain feeder plate does. The source reports single-bearing dies built for three stages.

A sharp change in bearing length from one point to the next is one of the common causes of streaking, because the metal crossing a junction cannot follow the step. Where the change cannot be avoided it is blended, either with a progressive taper, a straight taper, or a radius.

Where this leaves a die steel order

The bearing is where the die steel meets the hot aluminum, so it is the part that has to hold its hardness at temperature and resist the metal sticking to it. The grade behind it is the chromium hot work steel AISI H13 and its European equivalent 1.2344, covered on the H13 tool steel page, and the extrusion supply programme is on the 1.2344 ESR H13 extrusion supply page.
